altTennis and training are two words that most people do not associate together. Tennis is a game where a tennis ball is hit back and forth over a net, how hard can it be? If you watch tennis on television, you realize how athletic these players are these days. It appears that your arms are doing all the work, but in reality it is the lower body and the core that are the primary power sources. Tennis athletes often present in our office with shoulder pain and elbow pain. call now for an appointment

Shoulder pain can often be traced back to poor mechanics and lack of involvement in the core. If a baseball pitcher were to stand on the mound and throw the baseball towards home plate without winding up, the ball would not have much velocity. The wind up allows the pitcher to engage the core through leveraging the ground thereby whipping his arm and releasing the baseball.

South West Health has partnered with Intelliskin, a local Newport Beach based company to help improve the posture of our patients and our athletes. The shirt is designed to simulate a kinesio tape procedure that we do in the office for postural correction. The shoulders are pulled back and scapulae retracted in such a way that the postural stabilizers are activated. The Intelliskin shirt allows our patients and athletes to essentially tape themselves by wearing the shirt. The shirt helps keep the shoulders in the ideal position for throwing athletes like baseball players, quarterbacks, and water polo players.

altSouth West health uses a high performance tape when we tape our athletes. It is called Rocktape, a company based in northern California. The tape is designed to optimize and improve motion. Most tape is designed to restrict motion, not Rocktape. The weave pattern is tighter on Rocktape as compared to standard Kinesio Tape. In addition, the adhesive that is utilized is stronger so the tape stays on better during competition. Rocktape even makes a version that is waterproof that works with water sports like surfing, swimming and water polo.

Cyclists’ core stability is usually insufficient to handle long rides.

Core stability means possessing the strength in the muscles that control the movement of the pelvis. This becomes vitally important when an athlete is requiring their body to perform at a high level.

The core stability muscles not only have to tolerate prolonged flexion of the spine but they also have to provide a stable platform to absorb the massive forces generated by the legs. Each time the legs push down onto the pedals, a force is also directed up into the trunk. When a cyclist becomes tired, they have more uncontrolled movements occurring at their trunk (e.g.,increases in lumbar flexion, rotation or side flexion) as they push down with their legs. This is because the trunk is not strong enough to absorb the forces from the legs and maintain a neutral spine, which causes fatigue and back pain. With good core stability, cyclists are better able to control these movements, absorbing the huge forces from their legs more effectively and therefore, cycle faster!
